Yoga ...

What to expect: smooth practice of asanas, pranayama, mudras, dharana (concentration) practice, and meditation.

What it's about: Wave-like movements of the spine and synchronized breathing are designed to awaken prana. Tri Yoga develops precise natural alignment in asanas, strength, flexibility, endurance, and long, rhythmic breathing.

Teachers and Centers: TriYoga was founded by yogi Kali Ray in 1980. Ray experienced a kundalini awakening and created a practice in the spirit of kundalini-inspired hatha yoga. TriYoga's main center is located in Los Angeles; other centers are located in Santa Cruz, California, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Iowa, and around the world.

What to expect: Classes vary widely based on individual needs and may include asana, pranayama, chanting, meditation, prayer, and ritual.
All classes emphasize spinal mobilization and coordination of movement with breath.

What it is: Vini Yoga is a useful therapeutic tool for the body, but it also focuses on developing the breath, voice, memory, intellect, character, and heart. The practice sees yoga as a means of cultivating the positive, reducing the negative, and helping each practitioner individually.

Teachers and Centers: Gary Crafts founded the American Viniyoga Institute in 1999. His main teacher was T.K.V. Desikachar. Gary Craftsow and Mirka Skalko

Crafts are senior Viniyoga teachers.

Yoga in the Krishnamacharya Tradition

What to expect: Classes are taught one-on-one or in very small groups, with a lot of individualization. In asana practice, each movement is coordinated with a specific inhalation, exhalation, or hold, and the effects are often felt in the body and breath, but also in the emotions.

What it is: Students like to say that they practice not to be better yogis during the hour they are on the mat, but to live more fully and easily during the remaining 23 hours of the day. The uniqueness of the training lies in the individual approach and taking into account the uniqueness
of each individual. It is not a person who has to reshape himself for yoga, but the practices have to be selected so that they suit the person.

Teachers and Centers: Sri T. Krishnamacharya (1888-1989) is known as the father of modern yoga. At Krishnamacharya Yoga Mandir in Chennai, India, his son T.K.V. Desikachar and grandson Kaustubh Desikachar continue their tradition of making ancient teachings relevant to the modern world.

Hatha Yoga

Hatha yoga is a standard term that includes most styles of yoga that combine breath work with physical exercise. The term is widely used, but it usually includes a gentle introduction to basic asanas for beginners or those who prefer a more relaxed style. You probably won't leave a Hatha yoga class sweaty and tired, but you should end up feeling more relaxed and at ease.
