No Water Land: The Stark Reality of Young Girls in Rural India

'No Water Land', an upcoming documentary by Saumitra Singh, explores the harsh reality of young girls in rural India, forced to choose between water collection for survival and gaining an education for future prospects.

"Childhood is meant to be a period of joy and education, but for many young girls in India, it's weighed down by the responsibility of securing water for their families. This burden robs them of their innocence and prevents them from attending school, hindering their overall development. The forthcoming documentary, 'No Water Land', unveils these harsh realities faced by these girls in rural India.

Esteemed Director Saumitra Singh and storyteller Abhi Raj Sharma have joined forces with producer Shaz Memon to create 'No Water Land'. The film presents the challenging circumstances of girls who are caught between the struggle for survival and the pursuit of an education that promises a brighter future.

The energetic and determined director, Saumitra Singh, announced the title of his latest documentary, 'No Water Land'. The documentary tells the inspiring true story of Shaz Memon, a UK-based philanthropist whose NGO, 'Wells on Wheels', tirelessly promotes the welfare and education of young girls in Maharashtra. These girls have been denied fundamental education due to the need to collect water for their families.

Producer Shaz Memon commented, "While all children have dreams, not all are given the chance to chase them. I aim to rectify this for the young girls in rural India, who are unjustly stuck in a cycle of water collection. This duty leads to more than just a lost childhood and health issues. Many have no choice but to sacrifice their education to fulfill this unavoidable necessity, a significant burden for any young child."

Director Saumitra Singh stated, "The sorrowful tales of these girls, forced to walk 3-4 kilometers twice daily with heavy water pots, moved me. Their household duties prevent them from receiving an education and engaging in regular growth activities. The fact that this is occurring just 150 kilometers from a metropolis like Mumbai shocked me, and I felt compelled to share their stories."

Saumitra and his team have finished location scouting for the film, and the project is currently in the pre-production phase. Saumitra extended his gratitude to Sanjay Kapoor, who recommended him for this project and serves as the brand ambassador for 'Wells on Wheels'. He said, "I recently completed a feature film with Sanjay, and I'm grateful for his guidance on this social initiative. I'm also thankful to Shaz Memon and the 'Wells on Wheels' team in Nashik for their wonderful work."

The documentary will be produced by Shaz Memon's NGO 'Wells on Wheels' in collaboration with Shukar Studios and Shiprartz, with Saumitra Singh as the director. Hasan Khan is associated as an Executive Producer. Abhi Raj Sharma will craft the documentary focusing on the girls' hardships.

Having previously collaborated with Naseeruddin Shah on his first short film, 'The Wallet', which received over 70 awards, Saumitra Singh is also awaiting the release of his upcoming films 'Taxi No 24' and 'The House of Lies'.

Abhi Raj Sharma, the director of Shiprartz and writer of the documentary, conveyed his gratitude for participating in this noble project. He mentioned, "I founded this company with my partners Amaninder Singh and Manbir Sandhu to produce authentically Indian stories. I never imagined we'd be telling the gut-wrenching story of young girls forced to choose between survival and education."
