GDP can be calculated using different approaches, but the most common method is the expenditure approach, which adds up the following components:
Personal Consumption Expenditures (C): This includes the value of all goods and services purchased by households for their own use.
Gross Private Domestic Investment (I): This component accounts for the value of investments made by businesses, including spending on fixed assets (such as machinery and equipment), residential construction, and changes in business inventories.
Government Consumption and Investment (G): This includes the value of goods and services purchased by the government at all levels, as well as government investment in infrastructure and other areas.
Net Exports (Exports - Imports) (X - M): This represents the value of a country's exports minus the value of its imports. If a country exports more than it imports, it has a trade surplus, while a trade deficit occurs when imports exceed exports.
The GDP formula is: GDP = C + I + G + (X - M)
GDP provides a snapshot of the economic health and performance of a country. It is often used to compare the relative economic strength of different nations, track economic growth over time, and make policy decisions. However, it is important to note that GDP alone does not capture other aspects of well-being, such as income distribution, quality of life, or environmental sustainability.
