It's more carefully concealed than at the beginning of Diablo 3, but it's a similarly unrewarding slog. Buying a battle pass or spending huge amounts on legendary crests won't do much, because paying for an excellent item drop will never be as thrilling like just getting one.

I'm not entirely sure if there is a way to separate the fundamental elements that make Diablo enjoyable from the mechanics of free-to-play commercialization. If it could be, Blizzard and NetEase have not found the answer. They've made a mobile Diablo that's slick, enjoyable, and even quite generous at first. But if you spend enough time playing it, you'll realize that the heart of the game has been ripped out into pieces and then given back to you piecemeal.

Diablo Immortal is not nearly the same as a free-to-play Diablo could be. It's true that the game assaults you at every moment with a multitude of microtransactions in all sorts of difficult to understand currencies. You will have to grind until you win especially if you decide to not spend money on the game. And the reward for all is a sloppy, reheated version of Diablo II's narrative.

And yet, for all its flaws, I loved Diablo Immortal more than I disliked it. It's got all the things that make Diablo Immortal a success with its thrilling gameplay, to its wide-ranging customization of characters as well as its incredible feeling of setting, as well as its ever-growing collection of exciting loot. Indeed, Diablo Immortal even has a few clever gameplay twists that I hope Blizzard will keep in place in Diablo IV.

If you were worried that F2P mechanics would undercut Diablo Immortal If so, then your concerns were justified.
